Our Mission

Pronounced S-Crank, we deliver unbiased power rankings built on real results—not opinions. Our rankings are driven by three key factors:

  1. How much you're winning
  2. How many points you're scoring and allowing
  3. How you perform against both strong and weak opponents

We believe a win is a win, but also recognize that not all wins are equal. And unlike many systems, we don't cap point differential—dominant performances matter here.

Our Story

SCRANK originally began as a tool to help Iowa high school football coaches project playoff outcomes. We provide an early look at RPI rankings and project final playoff RPI standings using our own SCRANK Ratings, designed to mirror state calculations as closely as possible. After Iowa, we expanded into College Basketball and later the NFL, offering detailed rankings, projections, and probabilities. All preseason rankings, projections, and probabilities are based on each team's final SCRANK Rating from the previous season.

All Iowa and NFL probabilities are powered by 10,000 full-season simulations, with win probabilities generated from SCRANK Ratings.

Rating Types

There are four main rating types you will see:

SCRANK Rating

Our core rating, based on results, scoring, and opponent strength.

QOR (Quality Opponent Rank)

This compares your performance against an opponent against all of the other opponents they have faced. The better games you are giving an opponent, the higher your rank.

DOM (Dominance)

Focuses on who you beat (or lose to) and by how much. Beating a top team by a wide margin earns big points; close games count too, but differently.

SOV (Strength of Victory)

Matches the NFL's official calculation, used in playoff tiebreakers. For Iowa, SOV is adjusted by class (e.g., a 2A team beating a 4A team is weighted more heavily).

Our only area of built-in bias: conference tiering. Wins (and losses) in stronger conferences carry more weight than those in weaker ones—because not all conferences are created equal.
